How to build an emergency hospital in two weeks

The story of how NG Bailey and others came together to build an emergency NHS Nightingale Hospital in just two weeks has been published in the June 2020 Heath Estate Journal (www.healthestatejournal.com).

The article in the monthly magazine of the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (www.iheem.org.uk) highlights the amazing collaboration between all partners, their innovation and determination to deliver.

NG Bailey was employed by Integrated Health Projects, a partnership between Vinci Construction UK and Sir Robert McAlpine and worked alongside the Army, NHS England, Mott MacDonald, BDP and other supply chain partners to transform Manchester Central Convention Centre into an NHS field hospital.

Our Engineering and IT Services divisions formed part of the 1,000-strong team which worked 24-hours a day to complete the 750-bed hospital from scratch in a grade-2 listed building. Supported by our Offsite Manufacture teams they installed and manufactured essential power, data and offsite services, including:

  • 7.2km (4.5 miles) of copper pipework for essential medical gas supply
  • 104.6km (65 miles) of data cable
  • 864m of Unistrut support frames to carry essential services throughout the hospital
  • 45km (28 miles) of power cable
  • 633 bed head power units, produced using offsite manufacturing
  • 1,520 data points
