Great place to work

Our journey shows that when a business puts its people first, it builds a strong culture, a great place to work and a legacy worth passing on.

Built on People

For over a century, our story has been about much more than products or profits – it’s about our people. Generations of teamwork, care, and shared purpose have shaped our culture and continue to guide us today.

Today, we are the UK’s largest independent engineering and infrastructure services provider. Everything we do is guided by our purpose: together we create and maintain exceptional buildings and infrastructure to enable a society that connects seamlessly, operates efficiently, and prospers now and in the future.

We are committed to creating a workplace – and a wider industry – where everyone feels valued, included, and respected.

Fairness, Inclusion and Respect

Our approach to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is built on three core principles. Fairness - this means removing barriers so all colleagues can thrive based on their skills, contribution and potential. Inclusion - fuels innovation, creativity, and better outcomes for our people and our customers. Respect - we foster a culture where differences are valued and everyone’s dignity is upheld.

Building an Inclusive Workplace

We want our people to be happy, healthy, and able to be themselves at work.

As a Disability Confident Employer, we are committed to attracting, retaining, and developing disabled talent. We work to remove barriers, create accessible opportunities, and provide the support our employees need to thrive.

As members of Inclusive Employers, we have achieved the Inclusive Employers Standard - a globally recognised accreditation and benchmarking framework for inclusion and diversity.

In 2024, we launched our dedicated Pride employee network in response to an employee-led proposal, to support LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies while helping to build a more inclusive culture. As part of our wider Fairness, Inclusion and Respect Strategy, we plan to continue developing and expanding our employee networks.

Employee Wellbeing

Employee wellbeing is central to creating a positive, productive workplace where colleagues feel supported, valued and motivated.

Our wellbeing programme includes an additional annual Wellbeing Day for every colleague, alongside support through our Employee Assistance Programme, Discount Scheme, Hardship Fund, and Volunteering Days.

In partnership with The Tonic, we also deliver the ‘Live Well, Work Well’ programme, offering interactive workshops focused on wellbeing, work-life balance, exercise, and building healthy, sustainable habits.

SAFETY FIRST & FOREMOST

Safety is always our top priority.

Keeping our people safe and well is at the heart of our strategy. We care about our people and continually strive to improve safety and wellbeing by embedding effective processes into our workplaces and encouraging a positive safety culture.

ACHIEVING IMPACT

Operating responsibly and sustainably underpins everything we do. We consider both our current operations and our future legacy, achieving impact through our projects and by working closely with our people, customers, and communities.

Volunteering is one way we give back to the communities where we work, and it’s open to all our people. We provide two days of paid volunteering leave each year for every employee and encourage everyone to use this time to support charitable causes during working hours.

As a responsible business, we focus our efforts on making a positive difference in the communities around us.

SPEAK UP TO RAISE A CONCERN

Employees who raise concerns in good faith about potential wrongdoing, or behaviour that goes against the law, our values, policies, or procedures, are fully protected.

We provide multiple channels to raise concerns confidentially, including our independent reporting service, now managed by Safecall.

Safecall, staffed by a team of former police officers, offers a professional and impartial service 24/7, every day of the year, ensuring every report is handled with care and complete confidentiality.
