Why choose Freedom

Whether you need a full life-cycle solution or a single specialist service, we provide the assurance and expertise to keep your infrastructure programme moving.

  • End-to-end electrical infrastructure expertise

We bring every stage of your HV/EHV journey under one roof. Our HV and EHV electrical services support early-stage master planning and grid applications, progress into detailed cable route and substation design, and then manage construction, commissioning and adoption. This joined-up approach shortens interfaces, reduces risk and ensures that decisions made in the early strategy phase stand up technically when they reach site.

  • Deep technical credibility

Our Power Division has built and upgraded complex HV and EHV infrastructure across the UK, including substations, transformers, cable routes and special engineering difficulties such as major road, rail and river crossings. We are accredited as an independent connection provider (ICP) with full NERS accreditation up to 132kV, giving clients confidence that their contestable works meet the highest technical and safety standards.

  • Urban delivery excellence

Many of our projects sit within dense, heavily regulated urban environments – from central London streets to multi borough regeneration corridors. We are used to working within tight footprints, coordinating with highways, rail and utility stakeholders, and maintaining public and worker safety. Our teams combine meticulous planning with on-the-ground experience in street works, traffic management and civil construction, ensuring that complex cable routes and substations can be built with minimal disruption to local communities and existing infrastructure.

  • Strategic capability

Beyond engineering, we support the commercial and strategic decisions that sit behind major power investments. We help clients understand the cost, risk and phasing implications of different options, develop robust business cases and prioritise works to align with funding, occupier demand and regulatory milestones. Our offerings can be accessed as a complete end-to-end service or as targeted support for specific stages of your project. Whichever route you choose, our role is to give you certainty: on capacity, on cost and on programme.

Our Connections Services

Grid and Connections Services

Securing the right grid connection on the right terms is often the single biggest risk to any major energy-intensive development. Our grid connection services exist to remove that uncertainty. We help you understand your options, engage early with DNOs and transmission operators, and progress from offer to energisation with a clear, realistic programme.

We combine technical expertise, commercial insight and proven relationships with network operators to deliver connections that work, not just on paper, but in the field.

Grid Connections & Contestable Works

For large-scale projects, we design and deliver major grid connections at 132kV and above, handling both the contestable and non-contestable elements. That includes everything from initial feasibility and application support through to the design, acceptance, installation and adoption of new assets by the relevant DNO.

Our experience includes delivering connections of up to 300MVA, including some of the largest on the UK Power Networks (UKPN) network. By managing grid engagement, wayleaves, outage negotiation and technical approvals on your behalf, we keep your programme moving and reduce the risk of late-stage surprises.

POCMAST™

Where overhead line connections are required, we can deploy our innovative POCMAST™ structures to create final connection points more quickly and cost-effectively than traditional tower modifications, minimising outages and improving safety.

Land, Environment and Surveys

Robust data underpins every viable grid connection. Our surveys, environmental and land services team provides the intelligence you need to make good decisions and secure approvals. We carry out utility mapping, PAS 218 surveys and targeted trial hole investigations to derisk congested underground corridors.

At the same time, we assess environmental constraints and underground congestion, supporting options such as directional drilling where appropriate. Our land specialists manage access, estate coordination and property interfaces so that easements, wayleaves and licences are in place when the project needs them. The result is a connection strategy that is technically sound, consentable and deliverable on the ground.

Design and Engineering

Once capacity is secured, the quality of your design will determine how resilient, maintainable and efficient your network will be for the next 30-40 years. Our HV and EHV design and engineering services deliver deep expertise to every element of your infrastructure – from cable routes and SEDs to substations and transformers.

We work collaboratively with your stakeholders, other design disciplines and the DNO to produce solutions that meet technical requirements, planning expectations and long-term operational needs.

Advisory Services

HV/EHV Cable Route Engineering and Construction

We engineer and deliver complex HV and EHV cable construction projects, including 132kV and other cable routes, through some of the UK’s most complex environments, such as congested city centres and critical transport corridors. Our engineers develop alignments that balance constructability, thermal performance, maintainability and stakeholder constraints.

Complex interfaces – such as river crossings, rail corridors and trunk roads – are treated as critical engineering opportunities rather than obstacles. We design Special Engineering Difficulties (SEDs) that integrate the right mix of trenching, ducting, jointing and reinstatement, supported by multiphase traffic and stakeholder management plans. When it comes to conductor type and sizing, we develop value-engineered solutions, including the use of 1600 mm² copper systems and, where appropriate, derogations agreed with the DNO to optimise performance and cost.

Substation Design, Build and Commissioning

Substations are the heart of your HV/EHV infrastructure. Our substation engineering services provide full turnkey design capability for 132/33kV and similar substations, including the integration of hybrid switchgear, multi‑panel 11kV boards and advanced protection and control systems.

These integrated designs form robust substation engineering solutions that balance performance, resilience and compliance across diverse environments. Our engineers have delivered 300MVA indoor primary substations with SF6free GIS technology, helping clients reduce their environmental footprint while maintaining reliability. Architectural design is integrated from the outset to meet planning, aesthetic and acoustics requirements, whether the substation is in a dense urban context or an industrial setting. Layouts are developed to be adoption-ready for both DNO-owned and private network sections, simplifying approvals and future modifications.

Transformer Engineering, Procurement and Assurance

Transformers are long lead, high value assets that must perform without compromise. Our transformer engineering services cover design, procurement and assurance for critical HV and EHV networks.

We design 160MVA 132/33kV transformers with full n1 resilience and enhanced reliability, ensuring that your network can withstand faults and maintenance events without impacting critical operations.

Our global supply chain capability includes factory audits, FAT witnessing and coordination with independent auditors to maintain quality. We manage technical verification, shipping logistics, marine warranty surveys and site delivery to ensure that transformers arrive on time, in specification and ready for installation.

Large Scale Electrical Master Planning

For major regeneration schemes and industrial campuses, we provide concept-to-blueprint master planning of the entire electrical infrastructure. We develop coherent architectures from 400kV down through 132kV, 33kV and 11kV networks, integrating private wire systems and future energy generation.

Our masterplans enable clients to phase infrastructure in line with development timelines, support low-carbon technologies and allocate capacity for future manufacturing zones or data halls. The outcome is a long-term power strategy that keeps options open while ensuring today’s investments are robust and scalable.

Construction & Delivery

Once designs are finalised, success on site depends on precise coordination, safe execution and relentless programme control. Our construction and delivery teams bring together civil engineering, electrical installation, street works and commissioning under one integrated management structure, delivering site‑ready HV and EHV cable construction services from first excavation through to final energisation.

We work in live environments, along busy roads and within constrained sites, ensuring that safety, quality and stakeholder communication are maintained from first excavation to final energisation.

Civil Engineering, Groundworks and Construction Delivery

Our civil engineering and groundworks capability provides the physical backbone for your HV/EHV assets. We undertake trench excavation, duct installation, backfill and road reinstatement across multi‑borough routes, carefully sequencing works to minimise disruption and interface risk.

Where ground conditions are challenging – such as landfill or made ground – we deploy ODEX piling systems to depths of up to 25m, providing stable foundations for structures and equipment. We construct AIS compounds, equipment bases, access roads and control buildings, coordinating closely with electrical teams so that civils are delivered right first time and ready for installation.

Street works, Traffic Management and Permitting

In busy urban settings, the success of a cable route often hinges on effective streetworks management. Our specialists handle Section 50 street works licences, Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTROs), road closures, diversions, parking suspensions and temporary signalling across multiple authorities.

We engage proactively with councils, transport bodies and local stakeholders to negotiate permit windows, secure extensions where necessary and manage compliance inspections. This integrated approach keeps traffic flowing as much as possible while giving our construction teams the access they need to deliver safely and efficiently.
