Reducing scope 3 supply chain emissions

We ask all our suppliers to set science-based carbon reduction targets. Let’s make impact together.

What Are Science Based Targets?

Science-Based Targets (SBTs) are greenhouse gas reduction goals aligned with the latest climate science and the Paris Agreement’s objective of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. They define the scale and pace of emissions reductions companies need to achieve, including across their supply chains.

As part of our responsibility and impact strategy, we are aiming for 75% of suppliers (by spend) to have set science-based targets by FY2027, covering purchased goods, services, and capital goods.

To support this goal, we are strengthening environmental reporting requirements across our supply chain and actively encouraging adoption of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) throughout our Scope 3 value chain.

Why We Ask Suppliers to Set SBTs

As part of our responsibility and impact strategy, we aim for 75% of suppliers (by spend) to have science-based targets in place by FY2027, covering purchased goods, services, and capital goods.

The majority of our carbon emissions come from our supply chain, which is why we are asking suppliers to set Science-Based Targets (SBTs) as part of our shared commitment to reducing emissions and driving meaningful change across our industry.

We encourage our suppliers to:

  • Set, validate, and publicly declare a carbon reduction target aligned to a 1.5°C pathway through SBTi or an equivalent approach

  • Report emissions data and progress annually

  • Work collaboratively with us to identify carbon reduction opportunities and share best practice

  • Engage with the tools, templates, and guidance we provide to support decarbonisation journeys.

How We’ll Support You

We understand that every supplier is at a different stage. NG Bailey will provide guidance, templates, and opportunities for training or workshops. We’ll also share case studies and connect you with other suppliers who have successfully completed their SBT journeys.

Frequently asked questions

We’ve answered some common questions to help guide you through what Science-Based Targets mean and how to get started.

What if we don’t have detailed carbon data yet?

Start with what you can measure. We’ll support you in improving data quality over time. The Supply Chain Sustainability School offers free resources, including a carbon calculator, which is a great starting point.

Do we need to hire consultants?

Not necessarily. Many suppliers manage the process internally using available guidance, tools, and templates.

Is it expensive or complicated?

There may be some upfront investment, but the long-term benefits - such as efficiency gains and improved competitiveness - often outweigh the costs.

What’s the timeline?

We’ll work with you to agree realistic milestones for progress, target-setting, and validation.
