POCMAST™

POC-MAST™ is Freedom's patented, award-winning grid connection solution that provides a quicker, safer and more cost-effective way of connecting to existing overhead line networks up to 132kV. Developed by our in-house engineering team, POC-MAST™ creates a viable point of connection without the need for major tower modifications, complex diversions or lengthy installation programmes.

Designed for both load and generation schemes, POC-MAST™ can be configured as either a tee-off or loop-in loop-out (LiLo) connection and can be installed on suitable tension and suspension towers. With patented technology, proven operational performance and successful installations across multiple UK electricity networks, it is helping developers, Distribution Network Operators and asset owners connect projects to the grid more efficiently than ever before.

    Safer and Simpler Installation

    POC-MAST™ has been engineered to reduce many of the risks associated with traditional overhead line connections. The structure is assembled at ground level and raised into position using a hydraulic ram system, eliminating the need for major lifting operations and significantly reducing time spent working at height. The use of screw-anchor foundations also removes the requirement for deep excavations, creating a safer and more efficient installation process from start to finish.

    Faster Connections with Less Network Disruption

    Unlike conventional connection methods, which can require temporary diversions and extended outages, the majority of POC-MAST™ construction activities can be completed before an outage is required. Final connections can often be completed within a single outage window, helping developers accelerate programme delivery and reducing disruption to the wider network. The result is a faster route to energisation and improved utilisation of existing network assets

    Reduced Environmental Impact

    POC-MAST™ offers a more sustainable approach to overhead line connections. Its compact footprint reduces land take, while screw-anchor foundations can save more than 30 tonnes of concrete compared to traditional solutions. With fewer plant movements, reduced excavation requirements and minimal disturbance to the surrounding environment, POC-MAST™ helps lower the overall environmental and carbon impact of connection projects

What is POC-MAST™?

POC-MAST™ is a patented point of connection structure that enables new electricity connections to be made to existing overhead line networks up to 132kV without the need for major tower replacement or modification.

What voltages can it be used on?

POC-MAST™ has been used on both 33kV and 132kV networks and is designed for overhead line connections up to 132k.

Can it be used for both generation and demand projects?

Yes. POC-MAST™ can be used for either generation or load applications

Can it support tee-off and loop-in loop-out (LiLo) connections?

Yes. A single POC-MAST™ can provide a tee-off connection, while twin POC-MAST™ structures can be configured as a loop-in loop-out solution.

Which DNO networks is POC-MAST™ approved on

POC-MAST™ has been approved and installed within UK Power Networks (UKPN), Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) and Northern Powergrid (NPG), with wider adoption continuing across the industry.

How do I know if my project is suitable?

Freedom offers an initial high-level suitability review to assess the proposed point of connection and determine whether POC-MAST™ is appropriate for your site and network requirements.

What foundations are used?

The preferred solution uses screw-anchor foundations, reducing excavation requirements, concrete usage and environmental impact while improving installation efficiency.

What is the design life?

POC-MAST™ is fully galvanised and designed for a minimum operational life of 40 years.

Does it require planning permission?

A planning application is generally required due to the height of the structure. Requirements can vary depending on the specific site and configuration.

Does a Section 37 consent application apply?

This depends on the location of the cross-leads. Where they extend beyond operational land, a Section 37 application may be required. Freedom can advise during the design stage.

How long does installation take?

Typical installation programmes range from six to twelve days depending on connection type and tower configuration, with outage requirements significantly shorter than traditional alternatives.
