Deployment at live bus depot

Project overview

In a significant stride toward decarbonising the UK’s public transportation network, we successfully completed the electrification of the First Bus Minehead depot. This project forms part of a wider initiative enabling a fleet of 26 new electric buses to operate in the Taunton and Minehead areas, marking a major milestone in sustainable travel for Somerset.

Sustainability impact

Each electric bus deployed as part of this fleet is projected to save up to 75 tonnes of tailpipe emissions annually. This contributes directly to national targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating cleaner air in urban environments.

Innovative delivery

We are proud to deliver the first site globally with Heliox Rapid chargers alongside Siemens SiChargeD units. Our teams worked in close collaboration with the First Bus depot team to ensure a seamless installation within a live, operational environment, maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and operational continuity.

Scope of works

Our responsibilities as principal contractor included:

  • Electrical design: Full design of EV charging infrastructure and associated lighting systems.
  • Charger installation: Deployment of high-powered EV chargers, complete with containment and distribution systems.
  • ICP coordination: Working closely with the client’s Independent Connection Provider (ICP) to ensure a timely energisation of site
  • Site logistics: Relocation of an existing porta cabin to accommodate the new infrastructure.
  • Security systems: Installation of CCTV and access control systems to enhance site security.
  • Line marking: EV-appropriate line marking to ensure safe and efficient vehicle movement.
  • Infrastructure: Installation of a cantilever gate to support controlled site access.
  • Support services: Full commissioning of the site and provision of ongoing client support.

This project not only enhances operational capability at the Minehead depot but also reinforces First Bus Group’s commitment to a cleaner, greener future. Our ability to deliver cutting-edge, future-proof charging solutions under live site conditions demonstrates our expertise and adaptability in the evolving electric mobility landscape.

Kevin Nixon Site Manager at Minehead said "NG Bailey delivered an excellent installation of the EV chargers at our Minehead Bus Depot. The team showed great professionalism throughout the project, ensuring minimal disruption to our daily operations. The site was left clean, safe, and tidy at the end of each day, which was greatly appreciated by all on site. In particular, the engagement and communication from Project Manager Joseph Walker stood out — he worked closely with our team, keeping us informed and involved at every stage. It was a pleasure working with NG Bailey, and we look forward to future collaborations."

Simon Goff, First Bus South Managing Director said “The 26 zero-emissions buses are fantastic news for passengers, bringing cleaner, greener vehicles to our routes, helping to improve air quality, and making bus travel even more sustainable. What’s more, the transformation of these depots will also bring smart new facilities for our staff at Taunton and Minehead.”
