New rail depot in Gosforth now complete

We are pleased to announce that the NG Bailey North East, Yorkshire, and Scotland Engineering team has successfully completed the Gosforth Rail Depot project, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

We are pleased to announce that the NG Bailey North East, Yorkshire, and Scotland Engineering team has successfully completed the Gosforth Rail Depot project, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The £70m project was designed to accommodate 46 new state-of-the-art trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro and replace the 100-year-old facility that formerly occupied the site.

Our scope of work included the design and installation works included the sitewide low-voltage (LV) and gas distribution, mains cold water and CAT5 protected water distribution, external car park and apron lighting to all roads, together with the internal mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) services fit-out to the main facility building and outbuildings.

NG Bailey was instrumental in the identification and isolation of all existing services to enable the demolition of the existing facility. Once demolition was complete, we undertook a phased programme of work to reconnect the existing services to the new building.

During the contract, NG Bailey were awarded an extensive telecoms package, which saw the installation of essential IT infrastructure, including a site-wide fibre network, passive infrastructure cabling, an access control system, an operational and security CCTV system, an intercom, vehicle barrier, pedestrian gates, an IP telephone system, visitors and staff enrolment system, and a site-wide driver communication system.

The overall scheme had a strong environmental focus, and the depot building was designed to keep the carbon footprint as low as possible.

We also created opportunities for the next generation to gain essential engineering skills and experience with one quantity surveyor, two electrical apprentices, and one trainee electrical engineer working on the project.

Andrew Morley, Regional Managing Director, said, “This successful completion is the culmination of three years of hard work by the project team. We are proud to have played a part in creating this new hi-spec facility that will ensure the community of Gosforth and the wider Tyne and Wear area, are equipped with state-of-the-art metro transportation for years to come.”
